Computer-Based CLEP Testing

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a way to earn college-level credit by examination. The University of Maryland College Park offers CLEP testing in all CLEP subject areas. A full list of CLEP subject tests can be found here at the CollegeBoard website.

Determine whether CLEP credit will be accepted: Before registering to take a CLEP test, please check with your academic advisor at the college or university you are attending. Not all institutions accept CLEP credit. Some institutions accept CLEP credit only for specific courses. Talk with your academic advisor before you register for a CLEP test.

Online registration and payment of administrative fee: The following web pages will assist you in scheduling your CLEP test. Online registration requires use of your credit card. If you do not have a credit card, please call our office (301-314-7688) for registration instructions.

Test fees: Each CLEP test requires a nonrefundable administrative fee of $31 which will be billed to your credit card using information you supply below. This fee is not refundable due to cancelation, "no show," rescheduling, or other reason. Please schedule your CLEP test carefully.

Each CLEP test that you take will cost $80. This cost is payable by credit card, personal check, or money order on the day of your test. If you do not have a credit card, please call our office (301-314-7688) for instructions.

Optional essay section for some tests: Some CLEP tests include an optional essay portion in addition to the multiple choice section. Check with your academic advisor to determine whether you need to take the essay portion of the CLEP subject exam you are considering. If you decide to take an optional essay section, there is an additional administrative fee of $12 for a total registration fee of $43. The online registration web pages will guide you through determining if a specific CLEP test offers an essay and if so, if you wish to take that optional essay section in addition to the multiple choice section. What to bring with you when you test: In addition to your credit card, please bring a government issued ID such as a current (not expired) driver’s license or passport with you when you arrive for testing. Your CLEP test will be computer based; we supply scratch paper and pencils for you to use as you test. You will not be permitted to bring anything else into the testing room. You will be provided with a small storage locker in which to secure your personal belongings. Please bring a minimum of personal items with you.

Reporting time: Please report to 2112 Shoemaker Building at least 15 minutes before you are scheduled to test.

Active duty military: If you are a member of the active duty military, please bring your military ID with you on the day of the test. Your CLEP testing fee of $80 will be waived; your administration fee remains the same ($31). Additional information about CLEP for Military Personnel.

Accommodation for disability: If you have a disability and need a testing accommodation (for example extra time), please call (301 314-7688) or email (testingoffice@umd.edu) to schedule your CLEP test; do not use the online scheduling. We will need a letter from your counselor or other health professional that supports your need for an accommodation. That letter should be on the office stationery of the professional, dated and signed by the professional, and must mention how much additional time you should be granted (50% extended time or 100% extended time).

Location of the Testing Office: The University of Maryland College Park Testing Office is located in 2112 Shoemaker Building (037), on the University of Maryland College Park campus, located between the Memorial Chapel and LeFrak Hall. Shoemaker Building is south of the Mall, near the Skinner Building and Taliaferro Hall. Please locate the building using the Visitor Services campus map.

Parking information: You will find parking information at the Department of Transportation Services website. We suggest parking in the Mowatt Lane Parking Garage, located within five minutes walk from the Shoemaker Building. Check Transportation website for parking costs in this parking garage.

Test Retake Policy: You may not retake a specific CLEP subject exam until six months after taking the exam the first time. For example, if you took CLEP Math on May 1, 2011, you may not retake CLEP Math until November 1, 2011 (six months after taking it the first time).

Cancellations: We always appreciate knowing if you cannot attend a test for which you are scheduled. We are unable to offer a refund of your administrative fee but a call to our office to cancel your appointment would be helpful if you can do so. Call us at 301-314-7688.
