International Travel-Study Awards

Alumnus Dr. Erik B. Young wishes to support international travel-study for a group of University of Maryland College Park undergraduates each year. There will be five (5) International Travel-Study Abroad Awards with stipends of $2,500 each awarded for the year. The purpose of the program is to give deserving undergraduate students the opportunity to broaden their international horizons while they hone their academic skills.  We invite all interested students to apply.

The application process is closed for the academic year.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the Erik B. Young scholarship will not be offered for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Eligibility requirements:

  • undergraduate degree-seeking students who have declared a major
  • must be of Junior or Senior class standing by the start of the Fall 2012 semester
  • must be enrolled for the Fall 2012 semester
  • good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA)

Travel must occur during the 2012-2013 academic year. Acceptable semesters for the award are:

  • Summer I or II 2012
  • Fall 2012
  • Winter 2013
  • Spring 2013

To complete the application process you should be prepared, in advance, with the following:

  • Your Major GPA value

  • Your major courses, including: course number, title and grade

  • Your proposal statement (not to exceed 5 double-spaced pages) that addresses the following questions:

    1. What are your career plans and why you think your proposed study abroad will benefit you professionally and personally?
    2. What you hope to achieve while studying abroad?
    3. Are your study plans:
      • (a) Part of a University of Maryland course?
      • (b) Associated with a course at another U.S. or foreign university?
      • (c) Associated with research you are doing with a professor?
      • (d) Appropriately described as independent study?
      • (e) Other?
        Please elaborate in your answer.
    4. Would your studies on this trip be a continuation of a project you have already started, here or abroad, or the start of a new project for you?

Additionally, each recipient of this award will be required to write a statement about what he/she learned from the experience within one month of returning.
