A candlelight vigil for the victims of the South Korea ferry disaster will be held on Tuesday, April 29, at 8 p.m. at the Garden of Reflection and Remembrance of Memorial Chapel. All UM students, staff and faculty are invited.
The Sewol ferry, carrying 476 passengers and crew, capsized off the southern coast of South Korea near Jindo on April 16. Most of the victims were high school students who were on a school field trip. The emotional impact of this disaster is felt not only by South Korean students, staff, and faculty who live far from their home country but also by other members of the UM community who empathize with South Koreans as they struggle to cope with this profound loss. The candlelight vigil may serve to help all members of the UM community mourn and support one another. The University of Maryland Counseling Center (http://www.counseling.umd.edu) is also available for additional support.
